Many hours of sewing, but well worth it!

As soon as I saw the Bella coat, I knew I had to make it. I ordered the fabric from a store in Italy (impossible to find double faced wool in multi colours in Canada). After downloading the pattern and reading through Bella’s meticulous instructions, I did have second thoughts-my hand sewing skills have never been that strong – but I jumped in. It took about 30 hrs from start to finish. The sewing assembly is very easy, but the preparation of the pattern pieces and the hand sewing takes time and patience. I suggest reading the instructions several times to truly understand the step-by-step process. You will spend 90% of the time pinning and hand stitching and 10% assembly-construction. Here are a few of my takeaways. 1)the guiding stitch should be removed as soon as possible (follow the pattern directions exactly and in the order given) because they will leave a mark. I used a steamer to press out 2) be very thoughtful before ‘trimming’ the seams. Double check that you are trimming the correct seam because it’s easy to get mixed up and cut the wrong way or cut it too short. I suggest basting everything first before trimming and hand sewing at least on one side of the coat (i.e. side slit), so you are sure to be doing it correctly! Be carefull when making the buttonholes. I ended up sewing them vertically instead of horizontally because of the ‘bulk’ on the center front edge which caused my old machine to stop half way through. Your machine may handle it better than mine. I turned up the sleeves, btw, because I like the look, but this is not necessary. FYI: Group 2, size 16 (I could go down a size), 100% double-faced wool. The only adjustment I made was lengthening the sleeve by 2.5 cm.
I attached some photos – not the best but you will get the idea.
All in all, the Rupert Coat by Bella is beautiful, cozy, and well worth the effort. I can’t wait to wear it in the coming weeks (and will share)! Thanks Bella! Another pattern triumph!
